As a volunteer-based organization, Main Stay’s dedicated volunteers play an integral role in helping deliver our program services. For example, a single rider in our Adaptive Riding + Horsemanship Program may need as many as three volunteers to assist in their riding lesson.
Volunteering at Main Stay is a great way to make a meaningful impact while also enriching your mind, body and spirit! Below are just a few of the many benefits individuals receive when volunteering at Main Stay.
Empowering Individuals with Disabilities
As a volunteer, you will contribute to the well-being of individuals with disabilities. Through adaptive riding and equine and animal-assisted learning, our clients experience physical, emotional, and cognitive benefits, and volunteers play a crucial role in facilitating these transformative experiences.
Personal Fulfillment
One of the most fulfilling aspects of volunteering is witnessing the positive impact our programs bring to our clients’ confidence and self-esteem.
Develop Patience and Compassion
Interacting with animals and individuals with various abilities requires patience and compassion. Volunteering at Main Stay offers a unique opportunity to develop these qualities as you learn to adapt to the specific needs of each participant.
Physical Fitness and Well-Being
Working with our horses, goats, sheep and other animals, and spending time in the garden will help you “get your steps in” and stay active. Volunteers contribute to creating a safe and enjoyable environment for participants to engage in physical activities that promote improved balance, coordination, muscle strength and overall health.
Connect with Nature
Located next to Glacial Park and within the Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge corridor, our farm offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature. We are proud to provide a space where individuals of all ages can experience meaningful growth and enrichment. Our natural setting allows you to immerse yourself in outdoor activities and bond with our animals, fostering a deep connection to the natural world. The serene and peaceful atmosphere at the farm is an uplifting environment that can serve as a welcome escape from the demands of everyday life.
Learn about Farming
Volunteers will see many aspects of managing a farm, tending a garden and taking care of animals. Volunteers who are interested in the health care profession will see how partnering with animals can help promote physical and mental health.
Gain Sense of Community
Volunteering at Main Stay involves working alongside a diverse group of individuals who share a common goal. This sense of community and shared purpose can lead to lasting friendships, creating a support network that extends beyond the farm.
