BARN ASSISTANT JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Summary: Responsible for the health, well-being and care of Main Stay’s animals on weekday mornings, evenings & weekends. Reports to the Animal Care Manager.

- Care for all animals on Main Stay property:
  - Feed and water all animals per instructions;
  - Empty & clean waterers/tanks as needed;
  - Turn in/out of horses daily;
  - Carry out treatments & administer medications (per vet or animal care manager
  - instructions);
  - Conduct surveys of every animal to inspect for injury or odd behavior;
  - Notify Animal Care Manager of horse injuries, health problems or concerns, and call the veterinarian if necessary. If Animal Care Manager is not available, contact Farm Manager, Equine Manager and/or Executive Director;
  - Keep all gates closed.

- Maintain cleanliness and safety of barn, arena, little animal sheds, paddocks & lean-tos:
  - Clean stalls;
  - Pick limestone areas, lean-tos, lane and small animal paddocks;
  - Keep all areas of barn clean – shaving, dust & cobweb free;
  - Routine fence repairs as needed and report larger facility issues to Farm Manager.

- Miscellaneous duties:
  - - Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge/Skill requirements

Ability to lift 50 lbs.
A thorough knowledge of horses and farm animals, as well as experience in caring for them, is essential. Farm animals include, but are not limited to, rabbits, cats, goats, sheep, and miniature equines.
A minimum of 3-5 years of horse experience is desired.
The individual must treat all animals with care and respect as well as uphold established safety standards.
Experience using farm equipment is a plus (UTV, small tractor, weed whacker, etc).
Other important traits include diligence, dependability, the ability to handle multiple priorities, resourcefulness and compassion for animals.

FLSA Status: Non-exempt/Part-time

Main Stay Therapeutic Farm is looking for an instructor to pick up a few (or more!) teaching hours. We are in need of a part-time therapeutic riding instructor with the possibility of adding barn assistant responsibilities for the right candidate. CTRI preferred, however, candidates in the process of obtaining certification are encouraged to apply as well. Candidates will be asked to demonstrate their riding ability and co-teach a lesson with a current instructor. Saturday and/or some evenings are required. Salary range is commensurate with experience with the instructor hourly range between $20-$25 per hour.

Barn assistant duties include feeding the animals, cleaning the barn, stalls, run-in sheds & paddocks, and assisting the Animal Care manager with other duties as requested. Candidates must be able to lift 50 lbs. A background check is required. Salary range is commensurate with experience with the instructor hourly range between $20-$25 per hour.
