Main Stay’s Partnership with Johnsburg School District 12
Main Stay has partnered with Johnsburg School District 12 in a variety of collaborations since 2019. Youngsters from early childhood classrooms, junior high and high school students have all participated in Equine and Animal Assisted Learning programs at Main Stay’s adaptive farm. Through the programs, students have worked on SEL (social/emotional) learning standards and life skills. Most recently, students from Ringwood Elementary school participated in Main Stay’s Books In the Barnyard program, a literacy enrichment program supporting all levels of readers. Students were able to expand their reading skills in a vocabulary rich environment with the animals, in the garden and around the farm.
A grant through The Community Foundation of McHenry County allowed students to participate in our Inspiring New Directions program, a proven positive intervention program as an alternative to traditional disciplinary measures. These sessions develop healthy conflict resolution, coping, and social skills. The McHenry County Mental Health Board has also supported Johnsburg Junior High group sessions at Main Stay.
Additionally, the entire Johnsburg High School staff participated in a Main Stay’s Harness the Power of Your Team day, focused on team building and leadership through unique experiential learning activities partnering their staff and Main Stay’s animals.
