Main Stay's mission is to enrich mind, body and spirit through powerful connections with horses, animals and nature.

History— Our therapeutic farm is located on a pristine knoll overlooking hundreds of acres of dedicated conservation land. In 1984, two women, life-long equestrian, Sara Foszcz, and Physical Therapist, Sandy Barcus, started Main Stay in order to meet the growing need for therapeutic horseback riding in the area.

Our therapeutic riding program was one of the first of its kind in Chicagoland. Main Stay became a 501(c)3 organization in 1987, dedicated to children and adults with physical, developmental, emotional and social challenges.

Main Stay holds the highest level of accreditation as a Premier PATH Int’l Center (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, International).

In 2012, Main Stay expanded its service offering to include animal assisted therapy through the acquisition of the Light Center program, formerly of Union, IL. Our adaptive barnyard setting is designed specifically to meet the needs of challenged and at-risk youth. Carefully selected animals, large and small, are truly “rescued animals rescuing kids.” Main Stay is a place where opportunities are provided for at-risk, behaviorally, emotionally, developmentally, and physically challenged individuals.

A large base of more than 100 weekly volunteers allows Main Stay to offer quality services with a small core of full and part-time employees. The rich 27-year history of Main Stay’s therapeutic riding program has only been made better with its countless examples of progress, determination and joy among our clients.
